About this book

Firstly, don’t let the fact that there are two Textbooks (part 1 and part 2) scare you! Remember that these books cover a syllabus that runs over a two-year period, and that, depending on the circumstances (or use situation), you will probably be required to cover only one of these books per year. In Calculus I at University, you will cover this amount of work in 6 months, so see it as preparation for the road ahead. Writing this book was not an easy task as it has to accommodate the needs of different learners. Some learners only need to master the basics of Mathematics and will end their school career after grade 11. Other learners are required to master more challenging examples, in preparation for Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level Mathematics in Grade 12. I therefore needed to include the basic work and many examples for the learners whose school career will end after Grade 11, but who still need the basics for their further studies. While trying to accommodate learners with different abilities, it is also important to stimulate and challenge those learners who will continue with AS Level Mathematics. I have therefore also included more challenging work in the textbook. I have broken down the more challenging work into progressive steps, so that the more difficult work can be followed and mastered. There are plenty of examples which will keep all learners motivated over the two-year period. This book will allow learners with different abilities and needs to work through the book at their own pace. While some learners are busy with basic work and examples, other learners can continue with the more challenging examples offered. The key to success in mastering Mathematics is CONSISTENCY. You will need to work through this book one page at a time, every day (or almost every day) of the week. Practice, practice, practice, and do not quit till the task is completed. Make use of technology like “YouTube” and start study groups where you can tackle problems together. I hope that you will learn to love Mathematics and the beauty in numbers and concepts. A day without Mathematics is a day lost. There is also a Teacher Guide available on BUKU: y = mx + c to success - Ordinary Level: Teachers Guide
