The 8-4-4 Art and Design syllabus for secondary education aims at developing students’ intellectual abilities, manipulative skills and creative talent through exposure to a wide variety of themes, materials, tools and techniques which are handled during art activities. The abilities developed through art and design will enable students to be self-reliant, face life’s problems with confidence and thus enable them to play a constructive role in national development. In addition, the syllabus seeks to create an awareness of the availability and use of the natural as well as the man-made materials in the environment. Cultural awareness at the local and at the international levels are also emphasized in the syllabus. In order to realise the objectives of Art and Design in the 8-4-4 education system two books have been developed to cover Forms One and Two and then Forms Three and Four. The first volume in the series, Art and Design for Forms One and Two, has been well received by secondary schools and is very popular at the moment for use at the lower secondary level. However, there has been a gap in upper secondary education, Forms Three and Four, with respect to the implementation of the 8-4-4 syllabus. This book, Art and Design for Forms Three and Four, fills the gap. The book is carefully developed to cover all the topics in the 8-4-4 syllabus. The text includes reading materials and practical exercises. All the chapters deal with specific techniques in Art and Design. It is important to refer to the first chapter of Art and Design for Forms One and Two since the elements and principles of art and design-making are presented in it. This book prepares the student for KCSE level examinations. It is therefore very important to read it carefully and do the practical exercises.
