This is a revised and, in many ways, a re-written edition of A History of Africa, 1855- 1914. It covers the period from 1800 to 1914, thus at once answering the call over the years for a less controversial starting date and enriching the original version by a margin of nearly sixty years of earlier history. Many portions of the previous edition have also been completely overhauled and updated the result of numerous improvement-oriented suggestions and advice by colleagues, and taking advantage of amazing historical research that has taken place in Africa from the time when the book first appeared in 1979. The aim, as in the past, has been to cover as concisely as possible the many facets of this period’s African History in a handy form for students and teachers in secondary and tertiary institutions, and for general readers. f this aim is achieved even in a small way, and stimulates greater output from those who read the book, the effort will be considered worthwhile.
