In this chapter we review to what extent agroforests that are classified as forests are in line with the objectives of sustainable forest management, focusing on biodiversity conservation, supply of forest products and carbon capture. We use shifting cultivation as a case study, given its pantropical distribution and the paucity of data on agrisilvicultural systems. We then highlight the limitations and threats of system intensification to delivering these goods and services.
